It can really help you on the day if you spend some time preparing beforehand. Set aside an hour to think about the job or opportunity you're applying for.
Find out about the company and job you are applying for e.g. look for a company web site.
Think about the kind of questions they are likely to ask you and try to prepare some answers e.g.:
- Why have you applied for this job?
- What interests you about this job?
- What can you offer this company?
- How would you describe your personality?
- Do you have any questions you would like to ask?
Be ready with a good question to ask so that you can sound keen and motivated about the job e.g.:
- How will the training be organised?
- What exactly will be involved?
If they have covered everything and you can't think of a question to ask say 'No thank you, I think you've covered everything'.
Make sure your national Record of Achievement Folder is complete, up to date and ready to show the interviewer. It may also help to have a CV to take along (see our CV tip guide).
Decide what to wear - something smart and simple. Find out where your interview will be held and plan your journey. Get there a bit early. Check your appearance. Take some deep breaths. Believe you can do it - and you will!
Performance Points
Give yourself time to consider the questions you are asked. Ask for a question to be repeated if you are unsure, e.g. 'Could you repeat the question so I can be sure I understood it'.
Make sure that your body language is strong and confident. Shake hands if possible. Sit straight in the chair. Give good eye contact and smile!
Remember that interviewers can't read your mind, so you will need to talk about yourself.
At the end, ask when you can expect to hear their decision, as this shows enthusiasm.
All this may sound complicated so why not contact your Personal Adviser at your local Connexions Centre? They can give you all the help and advice you need!
